On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, there will be a significant memorial event on the occasion of the 63rd annual day of the construction of the Berlin Wall. This event is an important moment of reflection on the history and the effects of the wall on German society.
place and course of the commemoration event
The commemoration starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Baumschulenweg cemetery, Kiefholzstraße 222–236 in the new part. The event is organized by district mayor Oliver Igel and the head of the district council, Peter Groos.
As part of the commemoration, the memorial plaque for the wall deaths without a grave site is initially commemorated. After then, around 4:00 p.m., another important place is visited: the memorial on Kiefholzstraße, near Dammweg. Here the two children Jörg Hartmann and Lothar Schleusener are commemorated, who were shot on March 14, 1966 by the border guard and who are considered tragic victims of the division.

The end of the memorial event is planned for around 4:30 p.m. and takes place at the memorial stele for Chris Guefroy on the Chris-Guefroy-Allee. Chris Gueffroy was the last fatalities of the Berlin Wall, and was shot by the border guard in 1989 at the age of 20. The memory of his story remains an important part of the examination of the past.
The long shadow of the Berlin Wall
The wall passed the city over 17 kilometers and was a symbol of division between East and West Berlin. In Treptow she ran across the area and created a situation that affects many lives and changed society profoundly. For the residents and the entire city, the memory of the wall remains an important topic that is still being discussed today.

The population is cordially invited to take part in the memorial event and to commemorate the victims of the Berlin Wall together. It is an opportunity to refresh the collective memory and to reflect on the teachings from history. The memorial event also offers the opportunity to exchange ideas about the experiences and inheritance of the shared city.
