Successful farewell: Ralph Gleis increases visiting numbers in the old National Gallery
«Caspar David Friedrich and Co.
The old National Gallery on the Berlin Museum Island again records increasing number of visitors, which delights outgoing director Ralph Gleis. With successful exhibitions such as the current presentation of works by Caspar David Friedrich and the focused exhibition on "Monet and the Impressionist City", more rush is expected.
Ralph Gleis, who had been working in Berlin for a good seven years, can look back on a positive balance. The exhibition “SeceSionsions is particularly emphasized. Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann », who also made marginal and complex topics about crowd pullers.
Another success factor was the reopening of the Friedrichswerder church after many years of renovation. The building opposite the Federal Foreign Office is now used for sculpture exhibitions that would otherwise have been invisible.
Gleis also emphasizes the strengthening of the old National Gallery within the Prussian Cultural Ownership Foundation and the State Museums. He sees the desired autonomy for the museums within the foundation as an important development to expand the resources and design scope of the facilities.
With his change as general director to Albertina in Vienna, Gleis is aiming for new challenges. He hopes to bring in his experiences in Vienna and to further strengthen the cooperation there.
The positive developments in the old National Gallery and the expected increase in the number of visitors show the importance of museums as cultural anchor points in society and as places of artistic exchange.
