live in the former border area: Excursion from the Mitte

environmental shop

The city of Berlin is rich in history and memories, especially for those who have experienced the time of shared Germany. A group of natural and historical lovers recently had the opportunity to explore the traces of the former border area. This excursion was organized by the Mitte environmental shop and led by a graduate biologist Gunter Martin, which offers profound insights into the development of nature in this once worried environment.

from military use to the diverse flora and fauna

The former border area that the city shared from 1961 to 1989 is still of historical importance. Between the concrete walls that the country once shared, a land strip with specific conditions was created due to military use. With the opening of the border area, however, there were also new opportunities for nature. Today there are a variety of plants, including undemanding pioneering plants that could develop freely.

biodiversity and endangered plants

Along the former border have developed different vegetation structures that have led to a remarkable biodiversity. Visitors can not only discover a variety of plants and flowering high perennials, but also observe rare bird species. It is even possible to meet five plant species at five in Berlin, which underlines the importance of this area for nature conservation.
