Eleven dead after fire in holiday accommodation in Alsace found

In a holiday accommodation in Alsace, a fire broke out in the early morning. In the meantime, eleven people have been found dead. The French news agency AFP reports on Wednesday, citing the fire brigade, that ten people with disabilities and a supervisor were missing in Wintzenheim near Colmar. The two remaining missing people are still being sought, a spokesman for the fire brigade told the AFP.

The eleven adults are ten people with a mild intellectual disabilities and a supervisor. According to Christophe Marot from the local prefecture, all people were in the holiday accommodation and could not get out.

France President Emmanuel Macron commented on the fire via Twitter: "In view of this tragedy, I think of the victims, of the injured, of the people who are close to them." Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne called the incident terrible and wants to get an idea on site. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin thanked the fire brigade for their quick commitment.

The fire broke out on Wednesday morning around 6:30 a.m. One person was injured, another is in shock. A total of 17 people were brought to safety. Around 300 out of 500 square meters of the house were on fire. An adult group from Nancy was on the holiday accommodation. According to a spokesman for the fire brigade, it was an association that takes care of people with disabilities.

The rescue workers on site were able to quickly control the fire. The house was still smoking and the fire brigade was initially unable to enter the building, France Info reported citing Marot.

The exact course of the fire is still being examined. The French fire brigade works closely with the authorities to find out the exact cause of the fatal fire.
