Insight and commitment: How the GI evaluates the EU AI Act and draws a position
press release: artificial intelligence and ethics - social responsibility in focus
Berlin, September 15, 2024-the current appeal period for the EU regulation on artificial intelligence, known as the AI Act, ends. The Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI) has published position papers through its departments and specialist groups to take a position and to illuminate the effects of this regulation on the area of artificial intelligence (AI).
The development of artificial intelligence has made enormous progress in recent years and offers considerable opportunities for different areas of application. However, the use of AI is not free from risks and clear rules and ethical principles are required to minimize possible negative effects on society. The computer science and ethics of the GI emphasizes the importance of observing ethical aspects in relation to the AI Act. In their position paper, the moral dimension, the context of origin and the regulatory environment of the AI Act are illuminated. A human-centered approach is important to anchor the EU's values and fundamental rights in AI systems. The publication of this position paper should contribute to active participation in the discourse on the technological future.
Another position paper, this time from the GI department of the GI department, is dedicated to the topic of interaction between humans and algorithmic systems, also known as agents. Research in the field of artificial intelligence deals with the examination and design of these interactions and aims to identify risks and prevent unwanted effects for people. The position paper emphasizes the importance of the analysis and evaluation of the social context, in which AI systems are used by humans. Regulatory measures should aim at the social mechanism and not restrict the performance of the technology or make the system's architecture the basis of regulation.
The AI Act is a milestone in the regulation of the use of AI and reflects the EU's commitment to make technological progress responsible. The position papers of the GI departments and specialist groups offer valuable insights into the ethical and technical aspects of the AI Act and encourage further discussions.
The specialist group women and computer science as well as the department of computer science in the right and administration of the GI are also planning publications on the effects of the AI Act on gender-friendly questions and the use of AI systems in public administration.
