A football evening full of passion: tension and fan conflicts in Kaiserslautern
Kaiserslautern - A football evening of the extreme
Last Saturday, around 48,600 football fans experienced an evening full of emotions and excitement on the Betzenberg in Kaiserslautern. The encounter between the 1st FC Kaiserslautern and Hertha BSC Berlin ended with a narrow 3: 4 and ensured frustrated faces among the supporters of the "red devil". While the game offered a spectacle, the events outside the stadium seemed to develop in a different direction. The police were well prepared in advance to enable a smooth process for the numerous visitors. Together with the Federal Police Inspection Kaiserslautern and other police headquarters from Rhineland-Palatinate, it was ensured that both the journey and the departure of the spectators were mostly easy. Despite the high rise of vehicles and pedestrians, larger traffic impairments failed to materialize, apart from a few waiting times when leaving the site. Only construction site-related disabilities and short closures of the eleven-friends scout were significant.
added time with unpleasant incidents
what started as a friendly coexistence and celebration of football turned into a tense and dangerous situation after the final whistle. In the replica phase, there were violent clashes between the supporters of both teams, which led to several injuries. In this heated atmosphere, the police used pepper spray to control the situation. Investigations into breaking the peace and assault were initiated and the investigators call on witnesses to report to the Kaiserslautern police.
The evening was particularly tragic for two stadium visitors who were injured during the game. A woman suffered fire injuries after parts of a fireworks -like rocket fell on her. Another viewer was hit by a thrown cup, which also led to injuries. For both incidents, the police are investigated for dangerous bodily harm, and here too the police are looking for other witnesses.
The police took the opportunity to thank most of the people present who had appeared fairly and peacefully for the game. It should be appreciated that despite the shocking incidents, many fans have succeeded in enjoying the sports atmosphere.
Overall, the police remained prudent and coordinated in dealing with the situation, and the majority of the audience will hopefully spend a nice Sunday after a partly turbulent football evening.
