EHEC outbreak in Berlin: Number of cases increases dramatically to 127!
Neukölln, Deutschland - In Berlin there is great concern: the number of EHEC cases has increased rapidly! By mid-October, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) already recorded 127 illnesses this year-an alarming increase compared to the 98 cases throughout 2023 and the 64 cases in the previous year. Tragically, there was also a death among those affected. The Neukölln district is particularly affected, where 15 new cases were reported in the second week of July alone. A spokesman for the Senate Department for Health announced that this outbreak is related to a seminar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in which around 130 people took part according to information from www.morgenpost.de .
EHEC, or Enterohemorrhagische Escherichia coli, is a dangerous group of bacteria that can cause serious illnesses, including bloody diarrhea and life-threatening complications such as hemolytic-uremic syndrome. The contagion is often via contaminated foods, especially beef and sheep meat. However, a strict cooking process can kill the pathogens. In 2011 there was a drastic EHEC outbreak with 4,000 sufferers and 53 deaths in 2011. The current situation is strongly reminiscent of the dangers that come from these scary germs.
