Darkness on the A100: Berlin switches off motorway lighting!

A dramatic change comes up to the drivers in Berlin! From April 2025, the lighting on the A100 city motorway will be gradually switched off, as the deputy director of Autobahn GmbH, Kerstin Finis-Keck, confirmed. Many road users were already confused when the light suddenly went out on a section between the Rudolf-Wissell Bridge and Rathenauplatz on January 9th. For many, this darkness is unusual because the A100 was so far illuminated.

security standards despite darkness

The decision to switch off is not without the basis. According to Finis-Keck, there are no security-relevant concerns, since unlit highways are just as safe as illuminated. Studies by the Berlin Senate confirm this claim. The modern lighting of vehicles and the newer light -reflecting road markings would also ensure that traffic safety does not suffer. The motorway director further explained that the measure also serves to reduce CO2 emissions and proceed against light pollution while costs are saved at the same time.

All in total, all lights on the A100 and as a result on the A114, A103 and A111 motorways are to be deactivated by the end of April 2025. Exceptions are only tunnels and their entrances and trips to enable drivers to adapt to the changed lighting conditions. This change is a challenge for many Berliners, since they have now got used to the lighting, emphasized Finis-Keck, but the changeover is professionally necessary, as is rbb24 reported.

The switching off of the lighting means a significant change in Berlin transport, which is why both drivers and pedestrians have to adapt to the new conditions. It is now getting dark on the otherwise brightly lit motorway sections-and many questions remain open to how this drastic measure will affect the security perception of road users, as well as Berlin Live holds.
