The journalist and human rights activist Düzen Tekkal was awarded the Press Freedom Prize 2024 of the Freie Presse (MVFP) Media Association last night. The award took place as part of the media night of the Free Press in Berlin. In his laudation, the Turkish exile journalist and author Can Dündar emphasized that Tekkal was not only an ingenious reporter, but also a determined fighter for freedom of the press and diversity. Over 450 guests, including prominent personalities from business, politics, science and society, were present to experience the award. In a congratulation letter, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, who was imprisoned in the Iranian Evin prison, paid tribute to the commitment of Tekkal.
As a winner of the "Victoria for Freedom of Press", the MVFP Tekkal honored for its courageous use for press and freedom of expression. In her acceptance speech, Tekkal emphasized that freedom and freedom of the press were not a matter of course and that she would work tirelessly for it. The laudator Can Dündar also emphasized Tekkal's brave commitment to democratic principles and emphasized that the world needed more people as it. In his speech, Philipp Welte, CEO of the MVFP, emphasized that in these difficult times people like Tekkal are important, who have the courage to raise their voice and stand up for freedom.
Düzen Tekkal, herself daughter of Kurdish-Jesidic refugees, has learned first-hand that freedom must be defended. As a journalist and human rights activist, she is committed to uncovering the truth and acting against any form of extremism. The MVFP press freedom price is awarded annually to personalities who are particularly committed to freedom of the press. In recent years, Can Dündar, Ensaf Haidar and the Investigative Center of Ján Kuciak have been awarded.
The MVFP has initiated the annual press freedom campaign #Press -Freiheitististrefheit since the terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. The award of Düzen Tekkal underlines the importance of freedom of the press and the need to protect and defend it.
