Drama in Zehlendorf: 87-year-old cyclist fights for her life after accident!

Zehlendorf, Berlin, Deutschland - On June 14, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in Zehlendorf, in which an 87-year-old cyclist was hit by a car. The 74-year-old driver was traveling on Sundgauer Straße in the direction of Clayallee at around 11 a.m. when she overlooked the right of the right-hand cyclist at the confluence of Sundgauer Straße. The 87-year-old drove on the CLAYALLEE bike path towards Saargemünder Straße and fell during the collision, suffering multiple injuries, including a considerable head injury.

The cyclist immediately took rescue workers to the hospital with life -threatening injuries. The driver was also severely affected by the incident and had to be admitted to a clinic. The police blocked Sundgauer Straße from Lützelsteiner Weg towards Clayallee and the Clayallee between Sundgauer Straße and Leichhardstraße from 11:10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. BVG bus lines 115, 285 and 623. The traffic investment service of the police department 4 (south) took over the further investigation into the accident during this period.

accident statistics and dangers for cyclists

Radiaries from the age of 65 are particularly at risk. In this age group, 43.5 percent of the fatally injured cyclists died in 2024, with the proportion of e-bikes even 68.8 percent. These figures illustrate the persistent danger for older people in road traffic and focus on the need for preventive measures and campaigns to increase the safety of cyclists.

In another fatal accident last year in Hamburg-Eidelstedt, a 57-year-old cyclist was recorded by a 74-year-old driver, which further underlines the serious risks that cyclists are exposed to in traffic. Despite resuscitation measures, the cyclist died at the scene of the accident. Such incidents show how important it is that drivers are particularly attentive when turning and threading into road traffic and strictly follow the right of way.

The combination of an aging population and the increasing use of e-bikes is a major challenge for traffic safety. It is urgently needed that measures are taken to increase both the safety of cyclists and to raise awareness of the risks in road traffic.
