Digitization of the judiciary: The survey shows the potential and risks of video conference technology and AI
A current survey on digitization of the judiciary shows that professional video conference and audiovisual presentation technology in the court halls are the basis for digital negotiation. The Berlin Systemhaus Arctic IT Solutions has asked around 130 judges nationwide about the “Digital Course Hall”. According to the survey results, two out of three judges expect the digitization of the negotiating rooms to reduce the financial expenses for all process participants.
Jan Christian Hesterberg, authorized representative at Arctic IT Solutions, emphasizes that digital negotiation can have the judiciary worked faster and more efficiently. According to the Federal Government's requirements, all court halls in Germany must be equipped with video conference technology by early 2026. Hesterberg also sees potential in artificial intelligence (AI) and is convinced that AI-based transcription can significantly simplify process management. However, there are concerns that AI could be used to manipulate video statements. According to the survey, 50 percent of the respondents consider such manipulation to be possible. Therefore, Hesterberg recommends that dishes should be relying on mature and trustworthy solutions when choosing their video conference technology.
The survey results also show that the judges are aware of the digital risks. In order to prevent the use of Deepfakes or manipulated data, the integration of high security barriers in the IT ecosystem and training for users is required. In the survey, the judge is therefore with a large majority for adapting legal training.
Arkutis IT Solutions presents their solutions for the digital courtroom on the German Administrative Court Day, which takes place from May 15th to 17th. The advantages and risks of the new technologies are explained there. A white paper with the central results of the survey is available for download at www.digital-gerichtsaal.de.
