German Institute demands that the Federal Government should continue the funding of the Federal Recording Program for Afghanistan

Human Rights Institute: Continuation of the Federal Recording Program Afghanistan urgently needed

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the takeover of the Taliban in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, the German Institute for Human Rights urgently recommends that the Federal Functional Program for Afghanistan (BAP) continue.

The situation in Afghanistan has continuously deteriorated in recent years and it is undeniable that this has led to an alarming level of suffering and serious human rights violations. The German Institute for Human Rights warns of the catastrophic humanitarian situation and emphasizes that widespread serious and systematic human rights violations take place.

The disregard and suppression of the rights of women and girls by Taliban is unprecedented and has caused a sensation worldwide. Human rights defenders, journalists, judges and cultural workers are persecuted and punished for their previous activities and political beliefs. Many of them live in constant fear and hiddenness.

For this reason, the federal recording program is of crucial importance in order to offer protection to those who have been committed to democracy and human rights. The program offers endangered Afghans the opportunity to come to Germany and to live in safety.

nele Allenberg, head of the human rights policy department inland/Europe, emphasizes the importance of continued support and explains: "The promise of protection that Germany gave to the endangered Afghans must not end. Many of them have given up their entire life to get to Germany via Pakistan.

The German Institute for Human Rights strongly recommend that the Federal Government also recommend providing funds for the federal recording program in 2025. The continuation of the program would not only be legally necessary, but also a clear commitment in Germany to the promise of protection that was given in 2021.

The support of endangered Afghans is of great importance and shows that Germany takes its responsibility seriously and campaigns for the protection of human rights.
