The narrow bike path in Möllendorffstraße in Lichtenberg: Better a bike path than none at all

The narrow bike path in Möllendorffstraße in Lichtenberg causes discussions. City Councilor Kevin Hönicke (SPD) posted a photo of the narrow bike path and emphasizes that he has been using it for years and considers it sufficient. Nevertheless, due to the many traffic dead in Berlin, it would be a cynical criterion to evaluate the bike path building solely on the basis of survival.

Hönicke recommends that the cyclists stay relaxed, not overtake and, if necessary, to use the sidewalk. However, he emphasizes that driving on the sidewalk violates the road traffic regulations and can be punished with an order money. He describes the interpretation of his statements as "strange" and believes that a narrow bike path offers the opportunity to drive forward and also enable overtaking maneuvers.

The SPD continues to focus on the construction of narrow bike paths, as this is better than no bike paths at all. The CDU MP Danny Freymark, on the other hand, promises more and better bike paths under the new CDU SPD government. However, he emphasizes that outskirts would need fewer bike paths. The current traffic situation is dissatisfactory for many citizens.

The question of responsibility for the poor infrastructure leads to mutual blame between the CDU and the Greens. Danny Freymark names the former traffic senator Bettina Jarasch from the Greens as the guilty for the missing bike paths.

Freymark emphasizes that around 19 million euros were not used for the expansion of bike paths in Berlin in 2021 and 2022. He calls on the citizens to make suggestions and address their MPs.

It remains to be seen whether there is a meeting between Freymark and the representatives of the “Lichtenberg bike district” to improve the situation. Freymark has already shown interest in the first bike bridge in Lichtenberg, but was ignored by the then green traffic senator Bettina Jarasch.

Overall, many citizens are dissatisfied with the current situation of the cycle path infrastructure in Berlin and hope for improvement.
