The price of war: diplomatic solutions as hope for peace

"nd.Diewoche": The price of peace - comment on the prisoner exchange between Russia and western states

The recently exchange of prison between Russia and Western countries may be controversial, but it illustrates that there are still opportunities for discussion between hostile pages. It is impressive to see how diplomats do their best behind the scenes to find a solution in difficult situations.

What strikes us in this case is the fact that people who were often convicted under questionable preliminary walls could be saved. Among them are Russian oppositioners who, thanks to this agreement, were able to regain their freedom. Of course there is also criticism, since a murderer was released in this exchange. But it is important to take a look at the big picture and to see the chances that this deal offers.

It would have been even better if Alexej Nawalny could have been part of the exchange. Unfortunately, however, he died in the penalty camp. In view of this tragic fate, we have to ask ourselves how many human life still needs to be sacrificed to achieve peace.

This exchange also shows that even a Turkish potentate can act as Erdogan as an intermediary. Although his role is controversial, he has contributed to the fact that doors were opened - both in government buildings and in prisons. Already at the grain negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, he has proven his skills as an intermediary. So why shouldn't it be possible to make positive changes even on a larger level?

So far, negotiations on the end of the war have often been dismissed as senseless or unrealistic. But in view of these new developments, it is time to ask this question again. Especially because Kyiv is now beginning to think about a diplomatic solution. It is important that such considerations are still seriously considered in order to finally bring about a long -awaited peace.

It is tempting to be influenced by the ugly accompanying music of a Dmitri Medvedev. But we should not be prevented from talking to such hardliners. Because only through the dialogue and the exchange of points of view can we prevent the war from going further. Yes, peace may have a high price, but the current price of the war is not long too high?
