The Baumretter Berlin: Sebastian Herges volunteer for climate protection and irrigates trees during the Berlin half marathon

The Berlin hobby runner Sebastian Herges is known for carrying his watering can "Berliner trees Wassener" for the entire 21 kilometers in the hand in every Berlin half marathon. His goal is to point out the importance of irrigation of trees, not only in his own residential area in the south-Neukölln horseshoe settlement, but in all Berlin districts and beyond.

In recent years, Berlin has suffered more from the effects of climate change. Fall rain, extreme temperature fluctuations and longer heat periods without sufficient rain were the result. For the love of climate protection in public space, Sebastian Herges devoted all of his free time to water from young trees in 2008.

In addition to his voluntary work as a tree founder, Sebastian Herges also runs intensive networking in order to draw attention to his concerns. He has founded his own Facebook group called "Berliner trees Wasser" and is actively on platforms such as Giessdenkiez.de, vostel.de and Facebook. Press inquiries are increasing, and Sebastian Herges is also represented at various events, including the "Berlin Klima Tag" on the RAW site, the "climate protection partners" of the IHK-Berlin and the "Berlin volunteer exchange" in the Red City Hall.

His actions always have the goal of sensitizing society to irrigate trees. Sebastian Herges is committed to climate protection without causing unacceptable blockages on Berlin's streets.

The public tree casting campaigns usually take place every first Saturday of the month. Further information on this is available on various volunteering portals such as vostel.de and govolunteer.de as well as on Giessdenkiez.de.

Sebastian Herges has already been officially awarded twice for his commitment to climate protection in public space. He received honors from Martin Hikel, the district mayor of Neukölln, and was supported by the CDU-Pankow BVV. He also won prize money of 1500 euros in an innovation competition by the volunteer capital. He was currently nominated by the Federal Network for Civic Engagement (BBE) as an ambassador for local climate protection in the neighborhood in public space. Within the SPD, Sebastian Herges is a member of the climate protection activist.

His activities have already attracted the attention of different media, including the BZ-Berlin, the Berliner Morgenpost, the RBB24 evening show, the Berliner Zeitung, the SPD PartiMAGAZIN, the Berliner Woche, the Berliner Abendblatt, EuronewStV, RBB888, the Berlin Kurier, RadioFlux and Tipberlin.
