The Columbiabad in Berlin-Neukölln: Why the closure was a mistake and politics had to react

The Columbiabad in Berlin-Neukölln: Why the closure was a mistake and politics had to react

The closure of the Columbiabad in Berlin-Neukölln recently caused great excitement. A fire letter and a collective sick leave by the employees led to the politicians to intervene. But was the closure really justified?

The Berlin baths have been in the headlines in the past few weeks due to an allegedly sighted Löwin on the outskirts. But this debate has now led to the reputation of the Berlin bathrooms. Even the rock -solid Deutschlandfunk began a report on Bavarian outdoor pools with the question of whether it was also the same as in the "Berliners Bäder".

But the Berlin outdoor pools are by no means focal points that normal visitors would not trust. Sure, stress can occur on hot days if the bathrooms are overcrowded. But serious conflicts such as mass brawls and rioting are extremely rare. Such incidents move in the alcohol area.

Of course there are baths that are particularly attractive for young people, such as the Columbiabad in Neukölln with its long large slide. Young people don't go to the swimming pool to sunbathe, but to have fun and hit the strands. This is normal behavior in youth.

However, there are also clear limits that must not be exceeded. Physical attacks and hostility to other bathers must be consistently punished. Bathroom bans and criminal complaints are the right answer here. But sufficient staff is necessary for this. In addition, self -confident employees who know their Pappenheimers are needed and know when they have to intervene.

So that all of this can succeed, good communication between the baths and the management of the Berlin baths (BBB) is essential. A fire letter alone is not enough. There must be a short wire and the opportunity to be directly and personally available at any time.

Obviously, communication between the employees and the leadership did not work. Instead, the illness of the employees and the subsequent closure of the Columbiabad oil were poured into the fire. The message that was transported was that the youngsters are so bad. A capital decision of the BBB, which massively damaged the reputation of the Berlin outdoor pools.

There would have been alternatives. The Columbiabad could have stayed open if the staff had been increased on the hot days. That would have been a signal. Instead, the bathroom was closed for a whole week. A wrong sign towards the public.

It is noteworthy that there is no public criticism of the BBB's approach. The ruling mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), who used the closure to stage himself as a man of the crime, has not yet been criticized. However, the method of fire letters and sick leave could be imitated, which is questionable.

It is astonishing how much power can be mastered with such actions and how easy politics can be blackmailed. There are professional groups such as teachers or police officers who have much more reason to complain. It is important that such methods do not go to school and that the reputation of the Berlin outdoor pools is still preserved.
