Container village or research construction? Fu Berlin and Senate in dispute

The wastewap on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is currently being used as a parking lot, is to be used by the Senate to build a container village to accommodate 260 refugees. However, the Free University (FU) has expressed concerns because it actually wants to build a building for teaching and research there. The refugee coordinator of Berlin, Albrecht Broemme, intends to temporarily accommodate migrants there, which meets FU's resistance. The university management feels over and emphasized that the area is urgently needed for its own construction projects from 2023.

FU Berlin is basically ready to support refugee people as far as possible. In the past, the university has already provided emergency accommodation for refugees. The university emphasizes that due to a high need for renovation and extensive construction planning, there are currently no alternative areas available. It suggests using empty buildings of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks nearby, which were previously used for the accommodation of refugees.

The Senate decided at the end of March to build another 16 container villages to accommodate refugees. These measures are necessary because there is a lack of living space for refugees and many are still housed in emergency accommodation such as the former airports Tegel and Tempelhof. The planned locations for the container villages are mainly in the eastern part of the city, which further exacerbates the imbalance in the distribution of the refugees.

The planned establishment of a container village on the universe area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf has led to protests. Criticism of the FU is expressed on social media, since it is normally considered to be cosmopolitan, but is opposed to the temporary use of the parking lot for refugees. Some users emphasize the discrepancy in the attitude of the university and see it a weakening of their alleged woken.
