U16 election: Berlin young people vote for the first time at European elections
On May 27, 2024, the U16 election starts in Berlin, in which young people at the age of 16 are allowed to vote for the first time to the European elections. The U16 election is part of the largest political education initiative for children and adolescents in Germany and aims to inspire young people for politics and bring their concerns to the public. The polling stations are set up in various facilities such as youth leisure facilities and schoolyards to offer the young voters: inside a wide selection of locations.
The idea of the U16/U18 election goes back to 1996 in Berlin, when young people aged 18 and over were given the opportunity to take part in a simulated election for the first time. In the meantime, the U16/U18 election is an established tradition and an integral part of political education for young people. In the last U18 European election in 2019, over 119,000 young people took part in 1,000 polling stations throughout Germany.
In Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, the House of Youth Charlottenburg, the Children's and Youth Center Insideout and the House of Youth Anne Frank are set up as polling stations. The youth councilor Detlef Wagner emphasizes the importance of the right to vote as a fundamental democratic law and hopes for a high level of participation of young people to set a strong statement for democracy.
The contact information for the U16/U18 state coordination office in Berlin and the district contacts are available for everyone interested in receiving further information about the U16 election and the locations of the polling stations.
In a time when democratic values and participation are particularly important, the U16 election offers a unique opportunity for young people to raise their voice and actively participate in the design of their future.
