Sheep back in the stadium: fun and nature experience for the whole family!
Sheep back in the stadium: fun and nature experience for the whole family!
On Sunday, June 1, 2025, a special event takes place in the Wilmersdorf stadium between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., which celebrates international children's day. The return of the sheep to the stadium is the highlight of the event. Together with the visitors, the district councilor Heike Schmitt-Melz will explain the importance of sheep for grazing and promoting biodiversity in urban areas. Admission is free and a prior registration is not necessary what makes the event particularly attractive for families and interested parties.
Numerous activities are planned in the supporting program. Visitors can take cargo cycling and environmental education offers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. the sheep move into the stadium. At 4 p.m. a guided walk through the sports facility is offered and a tour of Flora and Fauna is on the program at 5 p.m. The event ends at 6 p.m. after the participants have learned a lot about the role of sheep in domestic nature.
The role of sheep in the city
The district office has been using sheep since summer 2021 to grazing the former grandstands of the stadium. This method helps to contain the growth of wood and helps to promote biodiversity in the city. Sheep not only offers direct access to nature, but also act as natural landscape nursing staff. The grazing creates nationwide short -grass areas, which are used, among other things, by birds such as stars and streams, as well as the NABU. This form of care for species such as the stone owl, which requires low vegetation for its survival, is particularly important
The grazing not only has an impact on biodiversity, but also improves the quality of the grassland. Intensive grazing through sheep leads to more diverse stocks and creates a mosaic of areas of different intensity. Various grazing projects in Germany, which are often supported by NABU, show the positive influence of these methods on the landscape and the preservation of endangered species.
Promote urban biodiversity
Urbanization presents cities from the challenge of promoting and protecting biodiversity. Cities are often perceived as "concrete deserts", but they also offer potential for different habitats. Initiatives to improve biodiversity in urban areas are therefore of great importance. These include the creation of nature reserves to protect rare species, as well as the use of local plants to attract local wildlife. In addition, measures such as green roofs and facade greening are promoted to improve the city climate.
The implementation of such projects not only contributes to increasing the quality of life of the city dwellers, but also sensitizes for important topics of nature conservation. The event on June 1st is another step to strengthen awareness of the importance of nature and biodiversity in urban spaces. This also paves the way to design the cities as the green oases of diversity and life.

The NABU also emphasizes how important grazing is for landscape maintenance by creating and preserving special habitats. The proportion of species that benefit from sensitive habitats is particularly high. Measures to promote biodiversity are not only locally, but also regionally important.
Overall, the protection and promotion of biodiversity in urban areas are crucial in order to maintain ecological equilibria and maintain valuable habitats.
