Budget lock in Charlottenburg -Wilmersdorf: Deficit not dissolved - million expenses are missing

Despite a significant effort, the district office Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf did not manage to fully compensate for its deficit of 7.9 million euros in 2024. Much of the missing amount of approx. 3.5 million euros cannot currently be applied by further counter -financing means, without this being serious cuts in offers for the population. For this reason, a budget lock on May 1, 2024 became essential.

The allocations for 2024/2025 are based on the results of the cost and performance calculation (KLR) from 2022. Unfortunately, the income of the district was not sufficient to cover the required expenses.

District Mayor Kirstin Bauch emphasizes the importance of improved financial resources from the districts. She hopes for more transparent, more reliable and more adequate financial relationships between land and districts. Despite the ongoing financial challenges, structural improvements were achieved, whereby the negative annual result could at least be halved compared to 2022.

The savings that have already been decided to cope with the deficit will have a noticeable impact on the citizens, especially in the area of green space care and with the hiring of the swimming bus from the new school year. However, the budget lock will not have an impact on the preservation of existing institutions, the fulfillment of legal tasks, the continuation of construction projects or the proper administrative activity.

at the meeting of the budget committee on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, further details on the financial measures are discussed.

It is obvious that the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office faces major challenges in order to cope with its deficit and at the same time maintain the necessary services for citizens. The budget lock is an unfortunate but necessary measure to ensure the financial stability of the district.

A table with comparative figures for income and expenses from 2022 and 2024 could offer an insight into the financial development of the district. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what measures the district office will take to reduce its deficit in the long term.
