On August 16, 2024 the time has come again - the 574th birthday of the Croatian writer Marko Marulić is celebrated. This time the representative for partnerships, Anke Pätzold, the Croatian embassy secretary and consul, Tino Klarić Kukuz, as well as representatives: inside of the Croatian community to put down flowers on the statue of Marko Marulić on Julius-Morgenroth-Platz.
The impressive statue created by the Croatian artist Prof. Slavomir Drinković is reminiscent of the important poet and humanist. The statue was given to the district on May 27, 2000 on the occasion of the 30-year partnership by the city of Split, the German-Croatian Society of Berlin-Brandenburg and the Croatian municipality of Berlin.
Marko Marulić, who lived in Split from 1450 to 1524, is considered one of the leading intellectuals of the European Renaissance. This year his annual anniversary of his death for the 500th time, which emphasizes the meaning of his heritage even more. Marulić's work was diverse, from theological and philosophical writings to reports about his time. Even if most of his works were written on Latin, he showed his versatility through important writings in Croatian and Italian.
It is important to preserve and appreciate Marko Marulić's legacy, because his works and influence go far beyond his time. His commemoration reminds us of the cultural diversity of Europe and the rich history that we share together.
