Memory of victims of the people's uprising: wreath resolution on June 17, 2024
June 17, 1953 marked a dark day in the history of Germany when the popular uprising in East Berlin and the GDR was brutally put down. To commemorate the victims of this tragic event, district mayor Kirstin Bauch and BBV head Judith Stückler together with Mario Röllig from the Association of Sacrifice of Stalinism e.V. and representatives of the factions on Monday, June 17, 2024 will be put down at 9:30 a.m. The commemoration is framed by honorary posts of the 5th company of the Wachbatalon at the Federal Ministry of Defense.
The popular uprising on June 17, 1953 was a reaction to the political and economic grievances in the GDR, which led to work. The Soviet occupying power reacted with great hardness and suppressed the uprising with military violence. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands arrested.
The Steinplatz, where the commemorative celebration takes place, has a long history and was the place of arrest and deportation of Jews in the time of National Socialism.
