Am Dienstag, den 14. Mai 2024, wird Bezirksstadträtin Heike Schmitt-Schmelz gemeinsam mit BVV-Vorsteherin Judith Stückler und der Gleichstellungsbeauftragten Katrin Lück an der Gedenkstele gegenüber dem Rathaus Charlottenburg an den Arzt und Sexualwissenschaftler Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld erinnern. Die Veranstaltung wird von der Magnus-Hirschfeld-Gesellschaft, der Bundesstiftung Magnus Hirschfeld, dem LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg und Maneo – dem schwulen Anti-Gewalt-Projekt mitveranstaltet. Memory of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld: 156th birthday and 89th anniversary of death

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, district councilor Heike Schmitt-Melz will be to the doctor and sex scientist Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld are reminiscent of. The memorial event is all about the plans for the long -term securing of Magnus Hirschfeld's inheritance. The doctor and sex scientist lived and practiced at Otto-Suhr-Allee in Berlin, where he shaped the first German homosexual movement. In 1897 he founded the scientific-humanitarian committee (WHK), which campaigned for the rights of homosexuals and celebrates its 127th anniversary this year. Magnus Hirschfeld campaigned politically for the abolition of paragraph 175 of the Criminal Code, which criminalized homosexual actions between men.

The Institute for Sexual Science, headed by Hirschfeld, was destroyed by National Socialist students in 1933, and his writings were burned in the notorious book burning on Berlin Opera. Persecuted by the National Socialists, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld on May 14, 1935 in exile in Nice.

The annual commemoration day is intended to help preserve the legacy of Magnus Hirschfeld and to emphasize its importance for the LGBT community as well as for the history of sexual liberation and equality. Through the honor and memory of his life and work, the memory of this pioneering pioneer of sex science should be kept alive.
