Women are shaping the city of the future: exhibition opens in Berlin!
On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the exhibition "Women Building City. The City Through a Female Lens" will open in Berlin. District councilor Oliver Schruoffeneger will open the event at 6 p.m. in the transdisciplinary center BHROX bauhaus reuse on the central island of Ernst-Reuter-Platz. This exhibition is a remarkable platform that explores the influence of female perspectives on the city of the future.
The exhibition is part of the program focus “Modern Emancipation” at BHROX and shows works by around a dozen architects, planners and artists from different parts of the world. The target group is over 2.5 billion women who will live and work in urban areas by 2030. This comprehensive selection represents both realized projects and urban development commitments and invites dialogue with comparable projects from the Berlin area.
Exhibition details and accessibility
The exhibition runs from September 17th to 25th, 2025 and is open daily (except Mondays) from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Accessibility is very important, the BHROX bauhaus reuse and the central island are barrier-free, although access via the Ernst-Reuter Platz subway station (line U2) is not barrier-free. Alternatively, it is possible to get to the central island with permission.
The exhibition was designed by Wojciech Czaja and Katja Schechtner and was previously shown in Vienna (2021) and Bregenz (2022). The volume accompanying the exhibition was published by Birkhäuser in 2021 and is entitled “Women Building City: The City Through a Female Lens”, which critically reflects on the role of women in urban planning and shows new perspectives.
Women in urban planning
The consideration of female interfaces is not new. Articles such as "Architecture for All?! Emancipatory movements in planning and space" address the historical planning of cities, which was traditionally influenced by men. These works discuss how women have historically developed critical approaches to repurposing and modernizing spaces. In particular, the role of housing is viewed as an area that can strengthen patriarchal systems.
The influence of the women's movements of the 19th and 20th centuries on housing reforms is emphasized, with the participation of women and their concepts being central themes. The exhibition will also address current assessments of the participation and influence of women in urban planning and address international goals for more inclusive cities.
This initiative reflects the growing need for greater diversity and gender awareness in urban planning to make urban spaces more equitable and engaging for all people.
