Bicycle courses for refugees: strengthen mobility and self -confidence!
The district office Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf has officially launched a new project to promote the mobility of migrants. In collaboration with the intercultural association Cycling as a means of transportation is seen as a key to integration and self-actualization, especially for women who are often faced with financial and social barriers.
advantages of cycling training
The free cycling training for refugee women has several objectives. It is intended to help women move independently in urban space and explore their new life environments. Many women feel isolated and often do not have access to public transport, which usually represent financial hurdles. By learning cycling, you gain self -confidence and promote your individual mobility. cycling is a sustainable approach that promotes both empowerment and CO2-neutral mobility.
The program offers workshops and regular training sessions, which are not only focused on cycling, but also support the exchange between women of different origins. Such training helps to reduce resentment and to reduce fear of contact. Women find a room for encounters that also facilitates contact with other refugees and drives their social integration.
successful implementation
The aspect is of particular importance that successful graduates of cycling training not only improve their skills, but also receive their own bike and accessories. For example, over 502 women have been able to learn cycling since autumn 2015, and more than 99 received a bike after their training sessions. This offer is made possible by donations in kind and money and shows the high number of participants, even in adverse weather conditions. The #Bikeygees e.V. project has specialized since its foundation in 2016 to enable women to become more independent and participated by learning cycling. This initiative is an important step in the direction of equality and social participation of migrants, especially against the background of the underrepresentation of women from these groups in offers for sporting and leisure activities.
