Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf: award for natural green space management
Biological diversity in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf: A sign of sustainable urban development
The district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf sets a strong sign for the protection of biological diversity in the city. Due to its participation in the “Stadtgrün Natural Nature” label procedure from July 2024, the district's ecological green space management is officially recognized. On September 18, the certification in Darmstadt will be awarded, which recognizes the efforts of the district for a natural design of its public green spaces.
The care of parks and green areas in a natural way is an essential part of this commitment. Measures such as the less frequent mowing of lawn areas promote the growth of meadow herbs, which in turn promotes a variety of animals and plants. The planting of domestic trees and perennials as well as the absence of pesticides in parks such as the Volkspark Jungfernheide and the Heerstrasse cemetery are further examples of the efforts of the district to promote biological diversity.
The label "Stadtgrün Natural" should not only make the natural design of the green areas visible, but also underline the importance of the district for environmental and climate protection. With the support of the alliance "Municipalities for Biological Diversity e.V." Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf receives access to expert advice, citizen participation and public relations to promote nature in the city. This cooperation enables a valuable exchange of experiences and the development of measures to further improve the inner -city green spaces.
The alliance "Municipalities for Biological Diversity e.V." is the largest network for natural municipalities in Germany with over 400 members. The allocation of the label "Stadtgrün Natural" to 65 German municipalities shows that the protection of biological diversity is becoming increasingly important. By the end of the year, there should even be 69 cities and municipalities that are committed to sustainable urban development.
The efforts of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf are therefore not only an example of exemplary green space management, but also a step towards sustainable and ecologically compatible urban development. Due to the certification with the label "Stadtgrün Natural", the district sets an important signal for the protection of natural habitats in the city and makes a valuable contribution to the preservation of biological diversity.
