Berlin SPD: Michael Müller before the political end!

The Berlin SPD is facing a turbulent election campaign for the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025. At the latest state representative meeting, Ruppert was elected to be top candidate with just 50.8 percent of the votes, with Ana-Maria Trăsnea particularly close. Stüwe, who has been a member of the Bundestag since 2021 and had previously been employed by the Berlin transport businesses (BVG), belongs to the left wing of the party. Annika Klose follows in second place, while Michael Müller, the former ruling mayor, after a defeat against Hakan Demir in third place, was surprisingly no longer secured, as the Berliner Zeitung reported.

The current SPD reconciliation in Berlin is alarming: With only 13 percent, the Social Democrats are far behind the CDU and the Greens. In this tense situation, Müller is forced to run directly in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf constituency to save his political career. He competes against prominent competitors such as Lisa Paus (the Greens) and Christoph Meyer (FDP). Its chances seem difficult, especially since the new voting right does not guarantee a Bundestag entry, such as Zeit online

struggle for the political future

Müller's setback is all the more drasty because he has been able to profile himself as a respectable foreign politician in the Bundestag in recent years. However, his former voter potential has decreased, and the decision not to achieve a list position puts it under enormous pressure. While the Berlin SPD is fighting for the return to old strengths, party leader Nicola Böcker-Giannini has announced that the election is not decided in surveys, but on the election evening.
