CDU demands realignment of help for Palestinians with moderate Arab partners

The recent incident on October 7, 2023, in which employees of the UN Organization Unrwa are accused of participation in massacres, also caused excitement in Berlin. The CDU/CSU parliamentary group has now spoken out and is calling for a realignment of German help for the Palestinians. The chairman of the working group human rights and humanitarian aid, Michael Brand, complains about the anti -Israeli and anti -Semitic attitude of the UNRWA. As a Berlin citizen, I wonder how these developments could affect our city.

It is known that Berlin has a large Jewish community and that the city is actively committed to promoting tolerance and diversity. The allegations against the UNRWA and the demands of the CDU/CSU faction have potentially impact on the financial support of organizations that are committed to intercultural exchange and peace in the Middle East in Berlin. It is important that the German tax money is not used to support hatred and terror.

On the other hand, a possible realignment of the help for the Palestinians with moderate Arab partners could also open up new opportunities for Berlin. The city has close connections to Arab countries and always tries to promote cultural and economic exchange. Increased cooperation with countries such as Egypt and Jordan could also strengthen the relationships of Berlin companies in the region.

Historically, Berlin also played an important role in peace work and promoting human rights. In the past, the city was host of peace negotiations and intercultural dialogue forums. It is important that Berlin continues to play an active role in the promotion of peace and tolerance in Middle East.

In order to get an overview of the current developments in help for the Palestinians, I have put together a table with important information:

| Organization | Previous support from Germany | Proposed new partners |
| ——————— | ———————————— | –——————— | Unrwa | High | Egypt, Jordan |
| Moderate partners | Low | High |

It remains to be seen how the federal government will react to the demands of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and how this will affect the help for the Palestinians and Berlin. As a citizen, I hope that joint efforts for peace and tolerance in the region will remain of central importance.
