CDU demands more visibility for Richard von Weizsäcker in Schöneberg
On January 31, 2015, Richard von Weizsäcker, the first German Federal President, died, whose political career shaped Germany. As the bz berlin reported, the Tempelhof-Schöneberger Patu members Patrick Liesener and Daniel Dittmar, the legacy of Weizsäcker in the cityscape becomes more visible. Richard-von-Weizsäcker-Platz in Schöneberg, named after him, has so far only has a small table that is reminiscent of his life and work, which is not enough for the two CDU politicians. They suggest equip the place with a larger information board to better appreciate Weizsäcker's significant contributions to German history and culture of remembrance.
Weizsäcker, who was in office from 1984 to 1994, is considered one of the best known and most respected characters in German post -war history. On May 8, 1985, he spoke to the Bundestag and defined this day as a "day of liberation", which not only changed the memory of the Second World War, but also addressed Germany's guilt and responsibility in the context of the Nazi past. This speech and his tireless engagement for the processing of the story make him a "guardian of the moral conscience" of his nation, such as the Wikipedia
The call to improve the visibility of Weizsäcker's inheritance falls together on the 10th anniversary of the death of the politician and the 80th anniversary of the exemption from National Socialism and should be part of the efforts to highlight its life in a time when historical awareness and culture of remembrance are decisive issues. Liesener and Dittmar emphasize that the planned information board would not only honor Weizsacker, but also could be integrated into the existing commemoration for the victims of the concentration camps.
