CDU Federal Party Congress: Friedrich Merz elected party chairman and presented a new basic program

The CDU held its federal party conference in Berlin, in which Friedrich Merz was again elected party chairman with an overwhelming majority. General Secretary Carsten Linnemann emphasized that after the defeat in the Bundestag election in 2021, the CDU was now present again and that Friedrich Merz also owes this. Linnemann praised the result of the election and emphasized that none of the other party leaders had received such approval.

In the CDU's new fundamental program, internal security and the abolition of the citizens' allowance are mentioned as important points. Linnemann explained that criminals should be judged quickly and that there was no effortless prosperity. Citizens' money should be clearly withdrawn and only those who could not work should be supported. On the other hand, if you can work, you have to do this to maintain social benefits.

As far as possible coalitions are concerned in federal politics, Linnemann cautiously commented. He described the Greens as "decent colleagues", but their politics had unsettled the country that the credibility of politics had suffered as a whole. The CDU will only rule if there is a change of course in Germany and people have confidence again.

At this point,

historical facts could serve to underline the importance of the CDU as a party in Berlin. The CDU was founded in 1945 and played an important role during the German division and the Cold War as a representative of conservative politics in West Germany. Since reunification, the CDU has participated in various federal governments and has also been a government party in Berlin several times.

A table with information about the results of the Bundestag election 2021 and possible coalitions could be of interest for regional reporting:

| Party | Voting share | Coalition options |
| ————— | ———————————— |
| CDU | X % | X, X, X |
| Green | X % | X, X, X |
| SPD | X % | X, X |
| AfD | X % | X, X |
| Left | X % | X |
| FDP | X % | X |

This means that various political options are available for possible government formation, from a grand coalition to a coalition with the Greens or the FDP. It will be shown how the political landscape in Berlin and nationwide will develop.
