Colorful and loud: The Berlin Freedom Parade brings thousands of people to the streets to fight for love and solidarity
Berlin's annual freedom parade took place last Saturday and moved with 77 trucks and the motto "Be their voice and our ... for more empathy and solidarity!" through the city center. Around 500,000 demonstrators danced from the Spittelmarkt to the victory column to promote the motto of the parade. Even if the goal of the protest was reached in the afternoon, it was celebrated throughout Berlin until night.
The participants of the parade are committed to tolerance and acceptance. Axel Wippermann and Hans Kremer, a couple who have been together for 35 years, marched hand in hand over Leipziger Strasse and emphasized that there is still a lot to do despite many changes. The number of reported procedures against intolerance has increased continuously in recent years, but many attacks remain unmistaked and are not recorded, according to the "Berlin Monitoring".
Annemike and Beatrice, two Berliners, emphasize the importance of the CSD (Christopher Street Day) as a demonstration and not just as a big party. They point out that in Kreuzberg, a district with a call for tolerance, gays and lesbians can no longer show themselves in public without being hostile. They are determined not to be intimidated or step back in the shadow.
Samira Elsner and her son Taylor also came from Bautzen to set an example. Samira's brother has outed himself as a trans, and since then the intolerance in society has become aware of her. Since then she has always been part of protest.
Despite all the difficulties, the participants emphasize that it is very lucky to live in Berlin. They want to stay and stand up for more tolerance in society. They also proudly represented this message from a white cabriolet.
Chantal Röller and Sandra Hollmann also traveled from Rendsburg to experience the CSD in Berlin. They have already participated in parades in Flensburg and Kiel, but the CSD in Berlin is something special for them. As lesbian women, they are not easy in their hometown.
The CSD in Berlin is not just a big party, but above all a demonstration for freedom, tolerance and acceptance. The participants are determined to stand up for these values and not be intimidated. Berlin is a place where everyone can feel free and celebrated by diversity and individuality.
