Bundeswehr wants 35 other Leopard 2 tanks
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) plans to procure additional battle tanks for the Bundeswehr Brigade in Lithuania. According to the Department of Defense, 35 other Leopard 2 fighting tanks of the most modern rescue center A8 are to be appointed. So far, only 18 pieces for Ukraine had been ordered. The time for ordering the fighting tanks is considered somewhat late, but as a necessary step for the planned stationing in Lithuania.
The financing for the project has not yet been completed, and the Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on it. The procurement of fighter tanks for the brigade in Lithuania is seen as a measure to strengthen the NATO east flank against potential Russian attacks. The brigade is said to be officially ready for use by 2025, whereby the delivery time for a Leopard 2 is around two years.
The stationing of additional Leopard tanks in Lithuania is part of the efforts to ensure security in the region and to ward off potential threats. The decision to procure further combat tanks shows Germany's commitment to defense within NATO and the support of the allies in Eastern Europe. The protection of the limits and the deterrent of possible aggression are the focus of this strategic decision.
