Member of the Bundestag Gesine Lötzsch receives death threats: violence and threats to politicians are increasing

Title: Politicians are increasingly threatened by violence: Gesine Lötzsch reports on death threats

The political disputes in Germany have achieved a worrying level. In addition to the usual hostility on the Internet and at campaign appearances, politicians are increasingly confronted with murder threats. Gesine Lötzsch, politician of the left, is also affected by this development.

In an interview with the digital media house Table.media, Lötzsch reported on experiences of violence during encounters with citizens. Even in her own constituency in Berlin there are disputes on the street. She tells of death threats and the desire of some people to attack them physically. Despite these threats, Lötzsch sees no alternative to a direct conversation with people. She calls for her party, the left, again, more on the street, in clubs and city festivals to be present.

It remains unclear whether Lötzsch switched on the police after the threats of murder or whether there are investigative results. But their experiences are not an isolated case. In November 2019 it became known that Bundestag members of other parties such as Claudia Roth and Cem Özdemir, Mike Mohring from the CDU, Petra Köpping from the SPD and Robert Habeck, Minister of Climate Protection of the Greens, were or are also confronted with murder threats. Even on the local level in Berlin there were violent threats of murder against Bettina Jarasch from the Greens when she was still a senator. In addition, an arson attack on the left-wing politician Ferat Kocak in 2018, presumably by right-wing extremists.

In view of this threatening Situation, Lötzsch emphasizes that a division of the party must be avoided. She points out that German history has shown that such divisions favor the strong right forces. Sahra Wagenknecht, another prominent left-wing member, is currently flirting with the founding of a new party, which is viewed critically by the left-wing top. However, it is not specifically related to a possible connection between the split and the death threats.

The willingness to use violence towards politicians has accepted terrifying proportions in Germany. It is of great importance that politicians reinforce the fight against this violence and stand up for the safety of the representatives of the people. This is the only way to maintain the foundation of a functioning democracy.
