Federal Congress School Psychology 2024: Mental health as the key to the future

school psychology in change: A look into the future

School psychology plays an increasingly central role in Germany, especially in view of the challenges that students and teachers face. The upcoming 25th Federal Congress of School Psychology, which from September 10th to 13th, 2024 in Hamburg under the motto "Mental healthy into the future!" will take place, promises to make a significant contribution to the discussion about mental health in educational institutions.

The interest in this congress is impressive in advance: all places were fully booked within a few weeks. This underlines the growing importance that school psychologists play in daily school reality and shows how urgently the expertise of their field is needed in an education system that is often still caught in outdated patterns.

A current survey by the Robert Bosch Foundation showed that teachers observed concentration difficulties among students and an increase in (future) fears. At the same time, almost 47 percent of teachers complain about problems with physical or psychological violence at their schools. These findings are alarming and illustrate that school psychology is not just an additional offer, but also represents essential support for students and teachers.

The relevance of school psychology is also illustrated by the statistics: on average, only one school psychologist comes to over 5,000 students, which shows a clear scope for reforms. The challenges of modern school life can only be mastered with a strong team of experts and a departure of rigid structures.

The congress is opened under the patronage of the Hamburg senator for school and vocational training, Ksenija Bekeris. The event offers an extensive program that deals with topics such as promoting mental health, radicalization, violence prevention and crisis intervention. This shows that school psychology cannot be viewed in isolation, but is embedded in a larger social and educational policy concept.

Special highlights of the congress become the lectures by experts such as Prof. Dr. Thomas Martens, who will talk about "the magic of learning motivation", and Dr. Anne Kaman, who presents the current status of the Copsy study. These program items are designed to provide important impulses for a positive development in schools.

"School psychology in the departure" is the motto of this year's competition, which is intended to promote innovative ideas and concepts in order to leave the rigid framework of the education system behind. Only through new approaches can schools in a changing society meet the needs of the students.

Finally,

Only an active examination of the challenges in front of which children and adolescents face can help develop the necessary skills to be successful and resilient in the future. School psychology thus proves to be the key to a positive educational future, which not only knowledge, but also conveys emotional strength.
