Federal Ministry of Finance stops planned extension in Berlin in favor of a multifunctional building complex

The Federal Ministry of Finance announces that it will forego its planned extension in Berlin after a review. The need for office space has decreased by mobile work, which is why the new building is stopped, the ministry in a tweet.

In March, finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) made it clear that he would not want to adhere to the previous plans for an expansion of the Ministry of Finance on Berliner Wilhelmstrasse. The planning was being revised, the ministry said at the time. The planned new building should cost between 600 and 800 million euros and at the earliest from 2025. The planning was commissioned in 2019 by the then finance minister and today's Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

According to information from ministry circles, the responsible Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BIMA) will revise previous plans. Instead of an expansion building for the Ministry of Finance, a building complex is to be created, which can be used by all federal departments. Among other things, this should serve as an alternative accommodation if the actual service seats have to be renovated. In addition, it is planned to build apartments in the complex. The revised plans should be completed by the end of the year.

The decision of the Federal Ministry of Finance to do without the planned extension is a reaction to the changed need for office space due to mobile work. Instead of investing in a new building, a versatile building complex is to be created that meets the needs of the federal departments. In particular, the possibility of having alternating quarters for renovation work is an important factor in the revised plans. In addition, the creation of living space is sought as part of the complex.

The exact details of the revised plans are expected by the end of the year. It remains to be seen how the new orientation of the construction project affects the expense and the schedule. However, it should be noted that the Federal Ministry of Finance adapts its plans according to the current developments and requirements.
