Brandenburg's new Interior Minister: Restart in the Protection of the Constitution required!
On May 22, 2025, the new interior minister of Brandenburg, René Wilke, commented on the dismissal of Jörg Müller, the former head of the state constitutional protection. Wilke, who is independent, rejected Müller's reinstatement and emphasized the need for a “restart” for the protection of the constitution in Brandenburg. Müller had been released in a controversy for the classification of the AfD as secure right -wing extremist party by Wilke's predecessor, Katrin Lange (SPD).
Lange had accused Müller not to inform the political managers in good time about the high classification of the AfD. This not only caused excitement in political circles, but also led to greater doubts about their presentation of the events. As a result, long resigned as the interior minister. Wilke is now faced with the challenge of transparent the processes around the AfD and the protection of the constitution, although it remains unclear whether an expert opinion on the new classification of the AfD is published. The AfD is currently only classified as a right-wing extremist suspicion, while the Bundes-AfD has already been upgraded.
reactions and political effects
The dismissal of Müller has caused numerous reactions. Jan Redmann, the CDU parliamentary group leader in Brandenburg, was irritated by the crotch and praised Müller's collaboration and integrity. Redmann called for explanations of Lange for the decision made. These events fall into a time when dealing with the AfD and its right -wing extremist classification. The Protection of the Constitution was originally planned to increase the State AfD after the state election in autumn 2024, but this decision was postponed due to the early Bundestag election to avoid the suspicion of the influence on the election, as the [Süddeutsche] (south German] (https://www.sUeddeutsche.de/politik/brandenburg- Interior Minister-Constitutional Protection Chief- Li.3248186) reported.
Wilke also announced an examination of the Dublin Center in Eisenhüttenstadt. This center had been opened under other political and social conditions and currently houses 80 people. So far there have been only three transfers to Poland, while 30 procedures are still pending. Wilke even expressed that investments in the Dublin Center could possibly be stopped if the situation should not change.
right -wing extremism in Germany
The development in Brandenburg's constitutional protection is done against the background of a worrying increase in right -wing extremist offenses in Germany. According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, there was a total of 25,660 right-wing extremist crimes in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 22.4 % compared to the previous year. The increase in violent deeds, which can be recorded with an increase of 13 % to 1,148 offenses, is particularly alarming.
The number of violent right -wing extremists is estimated at around 14,500, while the entire right -wing extremist personal potential is 40,600. The increase in right -wing extremist demonstrations and the increase in xenophobic acts of violence is an important problem, especially with regard to the topics of migration and asylum, which are increasingly in the focus of right -wing extremists.
