Fire on Berliner Sprengplatz: A lot of explosive fabrics significantly reduced
After the fire on Sprengplatz in the Grunewald Berliner, the amount of stored explosive substances has been significantly reduced according to the Senate Administration. At the moment there are still 4.4 tons there, while it was 12.9 tons before the fire almost a year ago. The net explosive mass (NEM) is the mass of explosive substances without packaging.
Police President Barbara Slovik emphasized that the reconstruction of the Grunewald Sprengplatz was used to implement current standards and thereby significantly reduce the amount of explosives.
on August 4, 2022, a fire broke out in a secured storage room on Sprengplatz. There were numerous explosions due to the illegal storage of fireworks, bomb blind pendants, grenades and ammunition from World War II. The extinguishing work was the most difficult and longest use for the fire brigade since the war.
Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) confirmed that there was no alternative to the explosive space. Above all, it emphasized the favorable location, far from residential buildings and short journey routes. Fire protection is to be expanded, including the installation of an additional hose system at the property border. This is intended to create a "water lever bar" to prevent sparks and fire spread.
Environmental Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU) emphasized that open explosions should only be carried out in exceptional cases. Dangerous fabrics and objects should usually only be stored on the explosive space, while destruction should be carried out in suitable other facilities. The good cooperation with Brandenburg is to be continued.
