New refugee accommodation planned in Prenzlauer Berg
The canteen building of the Vivantes Hospital in Prenzlauer Berg, built in GDR times, was recently demolished. The construction of a new refugee accommodation is now planned in its place. The planned number of residents is 336 people.
The demolition of the building stretched over several weeks, with the concrete debris being gradually removed. In contrast to the main building of the hospital, which is a listed building, the canteen building was not protected and could therefore be demolished.
Since 2018, there have been plans to build a modular accommodation for refugees (MUF) at this location. This design consists of a reinforced concrete construction and is designed for a lifespan of 60 years. The start of construction and degree have been postponed several times. Last year, the responsible Senate Department for Integration, Work and Social Affairs announced that the accommodation should be ready for occupancy by June 30, 2024. In the meantime, however, a completion date is spoken in July 2025.
The planned accommodation comprises three individual buildings that extend along Ella-Kay-Straße to the Thälmannpark. There, 336 refugees should temporarily find a home. No additional infrastructure is provided.
The green, park -like courtyard of the former hospital site will be preserved because it is listed. The listed red brick buildings on the area should not be used for refugee accommodation. Instead, the district office plans its use for other purposes.
The capacity for the accommodation of refugees in Berlin-Pankow, which includes Prenzlauer Berg, is already busy. So far there are 17 accommodations in district with space for a total of over 5,300 residents. Therefore, new MUF will also be built in Kavalierstraße (414 places until November 2025) and in Kirchstrasse (320 seats until the end of 2023).
In Neukölln, on the other hand, a nursing home has to close for refugees. The number of asylum seekers in Berlin rose by over 50 percent in the first half of the year, so new accommodations are urgently needed. The Simeon diaconal gives the location in Sonnenallee because a necessary renovation for the facility would have become too expensive. The 120 seniors who live there are distributed to other homes. The House of Representatives must also approved the rental of the house as refugee accommodation, which is planned for a period of ten years. According to the “Berliner Zeitung”, the monthly rent is 137,500 euros net.
