Population census 2022: Saarland and Bremen benefit, Berlin and Hamburg lose
better financing for Bremen thanks to corrected population
The recent results of the 2022 population census have positive effects on Bremen and Saarland, according to the IFO Institute. The corrected population will mean significant financial improvement for these two small countries in the future. Bremen will receive 242 euros more per inhabitant, while the Saarland benefits with an additional 192 euros per capita due to the population that is corrected upwards.
In contrast, Berlin was expected to expect 129 euros less per inhabitant as the largest loser, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a minus of 107 euros and Hamburg with a minus of 103 euros. The census 2022 showed that around 1.4 million people live less in Germany than previously assumed. Since the population of the population plays an important role in state financial equalization, the countries must now expect lower financial losses with lower population. The most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia will be the biggest winner in absolute numbers, according to the IFO Institute, with annual additional income of around 584 million euros. However, this only corresponds to an increase of 32 euros.
The correction of the population clearly shows how important a precise recording of the population is for the distribution of financial resources between the federal states. The results of the census have direct effects on the households and finances of the countries, and correct data acquisition is crucial for a fair and transparent distribution of financial resources within Germany.
