Population growth in Berlin and Brandenburg: What is behind it?
effects of population growth in Berlin and Brandenburg
The Statistics Office recently announced that Berlin and Brandenburg will continue to record increasing moves. In 2023, around 188,000 people moved to Berlin, while 155,000 people left the city. This corresponds to an increase of around 33,000 inhabitants.
Interestingly, the population growth in Berlin mainly comes from abroad, while the city loses residents to other federal states within Germany. In particular, the hike from Berlin to Brandenburg is increasing, with almost 17,000 people who move from the capital to the neighboring country. Brandenburg has a total of 96,000 moves compared to 66,000 moves, which leads to an increase of almost 30,000 inhabitants. This influx of people has an impact on both regions. In Brandenburg, all counties and independent cities benefit from migratory gains, with the districts of Teltow-Fläming, Barnim and Potsdam-Mittelmark at the top.
This development shows that both Berlin and Brandenburg are attractive destinations for add -ups, be it from abroad or from other parts of Germany. It will be interesting to observe how this population growth affects the cities and municipalities in the region in the long term.
