Procurement of Leopard 2 fighter tanks for Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) plans to order additional battle tanks to equip the Bundeswehr Brigade in Lithuania. According to reports, 35 other Leopard 2 fighting tanks of the modern A8 rescue stand are to be ordered. So far, only 18 tanks have been ordered to compensate for taxes to Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense has informed the Bundestag's budget committee in this regard. The exact financing and the delivery time of the tanks ordered are not yet known.
The order of the additional tanks is welcomed, but it is pointed out that this is done a little late in terms of schedules. CDU budget politician Ingo Gädechens said that the financing of the project still has to be clarified. The Ministry of Defense has not made a statement and emphasizes the confidentiality of arms transactions.
The brigade in Lithuania, whose official start of service is planned for 2025, should be ready for use by 2027 at the latest. Their purpose is to secure the NATO east flank and defend potential Russian attacks. The procurement and equipment with additional fighting tanks thus serve to strengthen the military presence in the region.
