Berlin administration: only 7,500 modern PC workstations up to 2026!

The Berlin administration is faced with significant challenges in terms of the establishment of modern jobs. The Senate recently decided to report on the E-Government Act for the third quarter of 2024, in which the activities of the ITDZ Berlin, the city's central IT service provider, are documented. It is particularly noticeable that in the third quarter of 2024 three exceptions were reported to use the IT services: Among them exceptions for the integrated educational management system (IBMS) of the Berlin fire brigade and digital plates for the district office Pankow. This shows that the common IT service provider cannot always offer the necessary support, which can lead to delays, as the Press and Information Office of Berlin announced ().

In addition, it was found that the implementation of modern PC workstations, known as “BerlinPCs”, remains far behind the original destinations in the administration. Digital State Secretary Martina Klement announced that only about 7,500 modern jobs can be set up by 2026, which significantly falls below the 15,000 planned. These jobs should standardize chaotic IT management in the authorities and thus enable more efficient workflows. Instead of various uncoordinated systems, the project aims at standardized and centrally managed workplace solutions that are to be used in the entire administration ( rbb24 ).

The need for changes in the administrative apparatus makes these developments even more obvious. Especially with regard to the digitization of the Berlin administration, it becomes clear that the implementation of the plans is slower than desired. This could have a significant impact on the efficiency of public relations and presents the black and red coalition with new challenges because the administrative business urgently needs to be modernized.
