Berlin police pull 155 broken bicycles out of circulation
Berlin's bicycle police officers are currently struggling with an unusual problem: their bikes are out of operation due to technical errors. An internal exam showed that a total of 155 bicycles had to be pulled out of circulation. This measure was taken after a serious defect in a bicycle was found in the police officers' driving safety training.
The problem was in the front brake, which failed when the danger braking. With closer inspection, the officials found that the hub was shot off the front wheel, which interrupted the connection to the brake disc. In order not to endanger the safety of the bicycle police officers, all 87 bicycles of a certain brand that were procured in 2020 and 2021 were temporarily decommissioned.
In addition, 68 bicycles of another brand were temporarily shut down due to an increased risk of falling. This defect resulted from an unsuitable laying of switching trains and brake lines. The police have already agreed measures to remedy the defects with the supplier in order to make the bicycles ready for use soon.
The current bans for a total of 155 bicycles have a significant impact on the patrol service activities of the bicycle relay and the traffic monitoring of the local directorates. A replacement of this size is currently not available, which temporarily affects the operational capacity of the bicycle police officers. It remains to be seen how quickly the defects can be remedied in order to make their important resources available to the bicycle police officers.
