Berlin Mint Talente 2025: Prices for top performance in schools!

On September 19, 2025, a festive event will take place in the Red City Hall in Berlin, which is dedicated to the outstanding achievements of pupils in the MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology). Christina Henke, the State Secretary for Education, will hand over her awards to the award winners as part of the “Berlin Mint Talents 2025” event. A total of 65 pupils from 21 Berlin schools and two teachers are honored for their commitment. The award ceremony is planned for September 23, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the Red City Hall.

The event is organized by the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family in cooperation with MINT-EC e.V., an association that promotes MINT education in Germany. Every year, particularly talented students who have won prizes at state level MINT competitions recommended by the KMK are honored. This also includes students who receive the MINT-EC certificate, which is awarded for outstanding achievements in MINT subjects in the Abitur and participation in MINT programs. The event also offers the opportunity to recognize teachers who are particularly committed to promoting MINT in their schools and who are nominated for the award by a jury.

Growing focus on MINT formation

The importance of the MINT formation is increasingly recognized because it is crucial for coping with global challenges such as the energy transition and digital transformation. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched the MINT action plan, which aims to promote MINT formation from daycare to further training. A central element of this plan are the regional MINT clusters who network actors from education, science, economy and civil society in order to create low-threshold, everyday educational opportunities for children and adolescents. These clusters are specifically geared towards regional needs and offer diverse learning locations and formats.

A total of 73 MINT clusters have already been founded in Germany to promote interest in MINT subjects, especially in rural and disadvantaged regions. Many of these clusters attach particular importance to addressing girls and adolescents in difficult situations to give them better educational opportunities. For example, there are projects such as "Mintcon" in Mannheim, which networked existing offers for MINT formation, and "Makemintcool" in Stuttgart, which makes existing offers more visible.

A review of the past few years

Last year, on October 7, 2024, 60 pupils by Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch were awarded as part of a similar festive event. Two teachers, Juliane Scholz and Mirco Tewes, were also honored. A special highlight was the keynote of Dr. Carmen Köhler, an analog astronaut and entrepreneur, who reported on her professional trip. Students from the Andreas-Gymnasium and Barnim high school provided the musical accompaniment.

In 2023, 65 students from 21 Berlin schools were also honored, with Sabine Wischnack, a teacher at the Wolfgang Borchert High School, receiving special recognition. The keynote speech by Dr. Jochen Müller, a neuroscientist, gave exciting insights into the scientific age.

On the occasion of the upcoming event on September 23rd, all participants can look forward to an inspiring celebration dedicated not only to the students but also to the dedicated teachers who make a significant contribution to STEM education in Berlin.
