Berlin's outdoor pools extend the season: swimming fun until the end of September!

The Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB) has announced that some outdoor pools will remain open longer than originally planned. The previous closing date for all summer pools was September 7th, but the extension of the season is weather dependent. The Gropiusstadt combined pool in particular will remain open until September 30th, regardless of the weather conditions. The outdoor area of Gropiusstadt will therefore remain available until the end of the month, while the halls will be reopened after the summer break.

The Kreuzberg summer pool, also known as Prinzenbad, also has adjusted opening hours for the coming weeks. From September 1st to 27th, the pools are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. An opening of 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. will be offered for the period from September 7th to 14th, followed by further reduced hours until September 21st. The Olympiastadion summer pool also has extended hours: It will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until September 21st.

Visitor numbers and weather dependency

The BBB reported a massive drop in visitors and sales this summer due to the rainy weather. Due to these unstable weather conditions, outdoor pools need to react flexibly in order to adapt operations accordingly. However, in the week from Monday to Thursday of this week, the outdoor pools received around 150,000 visitors, making it one of the busiest weeks in the last four years. Since the start of the season at the end of April to the end of July, the outdoor pools have received a total of around 760,000 visitors, although this is around 110,000 fewer than in the same period last year Berliner Abendblatt reported.

Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the Berlin swimming pool company has drawn an overall positive assessment of the summer season so far. By the middle of the summer holidays, around 570,000 visitors had been recorded in 15 open-air swimming pools, without any serious safety incidents. Only 303 people were expelled for violating the house and bathing rules. At the same time, a good security concept in cooperation with the police ensured that bathers had a consistently positive experience.

Further measures and developments

The security concept includes an ID requirement for quick identification in the event of any incidents as well as video surveillance at the entrances and exits in four bathrooms. The SafeNow app, which makes it easy to contact security forces, is also being tested in the Neukölln and Pankow summer pools. New entry strategies at five summer pools, such as online ticket sales, have also helped reduce queues.

The RBB explains that the Mariendorf summer pool was reopened on Friday, July 19th after renovation work, which further improves the offering of Berlin's outdoor pools. An updated overview of pool occupancy can be viewed on the BBB website.

In summary, it can be said that the adjustment of the opening times for the outdoor pools in Berlin is both a reaction to the weather forecasts and an attempt to counteract the declining number of visitors. The coming weeks in Berlin's open-air swimming pools promise more opportunities for relaxation and leisure activities, despite the previous weather conditions.
