In the pulsating capital Berlin, which is known for its lively restaurant scene and radiant cafés, there is still an urgent lack of special leisure opportunities: outdoor pools and lakes are still rare. Especially on hot summer days, when the thermometer increases to 30 degrees Celsius, the call for more swimming options is loud. The existing bathrooms swell over, and the bathers experience the often frustrating reality of long queues and overcrowded halls during their visit.

A particularly striking example is the Stadtbad Tiergarten, which is currently being renovated extensively between 2019 and 2024. This renovation includes a complex redesign of the tiles, the changing rooms and sanitary facilities, as well as the integration of modern features such as a winter garden and a climbing wall. But a very significant improvement that many visitors had hoped for - the outdoor pool - continues. During the reopening in January 2024, the bathers found that the desired pool was not yet in sight.

Waiting for the outdoor pool

The disappointment among the bathers is noticeable, especially in the current summer heat. The question arises: What went wrong here? A spokeswoman for the Senate Department for Interior and Sport explains: "A prerequisite for construction is a secure financing." This topic has proven to be a well -known hurdle. In order to get into the tender phase with the Berlin bathing companies that are responsible for the building, financial means had to be secured beforehand, which apparently took some time.

But now there is progress: a secure financing has been guaranteed. The funds are to be provided by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building and the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living. The amount estimated for the project is around 6 million euros, and the planning provides for a 25-meter pool with a small fun area and a paddling pool for children. When the construction will begin is currently unclear, since the public tenders for the bathroom in Berlin are still being prepared.

For the next bathing season, which lasts from May to September 2025, it seems unlikely that the outdoor pool will be available. The construction project is expected to take a whole year, which means that visitors have to switch to other swimming opportunities in the city by 2026. The lack of sufficient outdoor swimming opportunities remains an unsolved problem that many Berliners pushing into the crowded outdoor pools on summer weekends.

It remains to be seen whether the Berlin administration can manage to take the urge into account for more recreational options and to use the needs of the population quickly and effectively. In view of the large number of projects that are in the capital and the increasingly present demand for open -air baths, the question of whether the city of Berlin can offer the necessary swimming areas in the near future in order to meet the high demands of its residents. The time will show whether the dream of long -awaited outdoor pool is finally fulfilled or whether it must continue to be serviced.
