Berlin: Housing cooperative This EG threatens the end due to financial problems

Financial problems threaten Berlin's housing cooperative "this eG"

Since its foundation in 2019, the Berlin housing association “this EG” has made headlines again and again. Now, however, it looks as if the cooperative is once again threatened with the financial end. The cooperative has around 400 members and has nine houses in the districts of Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Schöneberg. Money problems were already an issue from the start: Florian Schmidt, City Councilor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and member of the Greens, exercised the right of first refusal for six houses in favor of the cooperative.

During the procedure, “this eG” was shortly before the bankruptcy, which earned the district a damage of 270,000 euros. The Court of Auditors described the procedure as "contrary exercise rights" and the CDU spoke of "favorite economy". An investigation committee was used to check the scandal.

So now the financial problems have occurred again. In a letter to the members, the cooperative states that it is heavily burdened by the increased construction costs. However, it will take a few months for the bank to release new money. In the meantime, the cooperative needs short -term loans of a total of 500,000 euros with a term of 6 months. The money should come from the members and three percent interest is offered. A proposal in the letter is that 20 members should be willing to provide the cooperative 25,000 euros each.

The district prescribed Marlene Heihsel from the FDP is concerned about the situation and states that exactly what it feared has occurred. The financial plan of the cooperative is too tight and it is only a matter of time before everything went wrong. It describes the whole thing as the "spring without floor". Heihsel believes that it was wrong right from the start to support the cooperative and that lawyers and doctors who live in the houses should not be supported with tax money.

This is also followed by CDU MP Timur Husein from Kreuzberg. He believes that every reputable businessman had to be clear from the start that this means a financial disaster for both the public sector and the cooperative.

At the request of the B.Z. The cooperative has not yet commented. It remains to be seen whether and how "this EC" will continue and whether another committee of inquiry will be used to examine the financial problems more precisely.
