Berlin examines politically problematic statements by police officers - around 160 cases lead to criminal investigations
The Berlin police have examined politically problematic statements by police officers in around 300 cases in the past two years. In about 160 cases, this also led to criminal investigations, as the police announced on Tuesday. However, no indications of internal authority or structures were found. Likewise, there were no indications of attempts at hike.
So far, the "Central" of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) has been responsible for misconduct by police officers. Since April 2021, it has been converted into the specialist commissioner for politically motivated service offenses. Police President Barbara Slovik said that the office stands for a "critical self -reflection" and "open culture of errors".This restructuring is also accompanied by an extension of the tasks. In the future, the Commissioner will also deal with possible dismissal of employees of all Senate administrations and district offices of the State of Berlin. The aim is to consistently sanction politically motivated misconduct both work or disciplinary and criminal law.
The Berlin police employ a total of around 28,000 police officers and employees. Several problematic incidents have become known in recent years. In 2020 there was a chat group of police officers with 26 members, in which racist content and swastikas were exchanged. In December 2022, the police reported two other chat groups with a total of 62 members, in which inhuman statements were also shared.
The public prosecutor is included in the examination of possible misconduct at an early stage, said a police spokeswoman. In the meantime, the reporting behavior has changed, so that inhuman behavior is more addressed than before.
