Berlin starts new law to save shopping streets!

in Berlin there is a turn for urban development: On December 19, 2024, the House of Representatives decided to amend the law on the introduction of real estate and location communities (BIG). This new regulation focuses on the so -called "Business Improvement Districts" (BIDS), which aim to upgrade economically -stricken shopping streets and centers. With this initiative, the Senate reacts to the challenges created by the bankruptcy of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. Economic Senator Franziska Giffey emphasizes: "The Big is finally there and will open us new opportunities for business development," so reports berlin.de .

The law stipulates that a community of property owners is founded in a fixed area in order to jointly implement projects to improve the environment. At least 15 percent of the owners must agree. Funding of up to 300,000 euros will be provided for such communities. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of the shopping streets through measures such as cleanliness, lighting and special sales campaigns. Senator Christian Gaebler from the SPD emphasizes that through their financial participation, the shareholders will actively contribute to the beautification of their neighborhoods, while the President of the IHK Berlin, Sebastian Stietzel, emphasizes the importance of a living city center, as rbb24 reported.

The effects of this new legislation can be clearly refrained from: the creation of BIDS could face small, independent businesses with challenges. Critics, as left-wing politician Catalin Gennburg, warn of a possible competitive disadvantage for smaller operators, since large companies could possibly dominate. Nevertheless, the Senate is confident that cooperative initiatives will lead to a colorful offer and positive urban development at a private level. The conversations for the design of the city are in full swing, and the first BID could soon advance implementation.
