Berlin opens new hangar at the former Tempelhof airport for refugees

Berlin continues to make room for the arrival of refugees, as new people arrive in the city every day and are needed for them. A current article by the Berlin courier reports that another hangar was opened for the accommodation of refugees on the former Tempelhof airport site. This Hangar, Hangar 1, offers space for up to 600 new residents and complements the existing accommodations in Hangars 2 and 3, in which refugees have been housed since December. In total, there are now an impressive 1400 places in the building complex of the former Tempelhof airport.

In addition to these capacities, there are also other accommodations for refugees in Tempelhof. Around 200 people are housed in a former parking lot in containers and around 850 people live in a nearby container village, especially Ukrainian war refugees. The new residents of Hangar 1 are accommodated in residential containers with up to four beds and receive food and health services from a catering service. Leisure activities and language courses are also planned. Some of the new residents will move from the overloaded arrival center in Reinickendorf.

In addition, the major accommodation at the former Tegel Airport, another central point of contact for refugees, is also expanded. Around 4,600 beds are currently available in lightweight halls and another 3000 places are planned. Integration should also be made possible in the large emergency accommodation, according to the integration senator canel Kiziltepe.

The number of arriving in Berlin is rapidly increasing according to Kiziltepe. This year, 12,556 asylum seekers were recorded until September, almost 40 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. In combination with 11,758 registered refugees from Ukraine, the 30,300 accommodation places available are 99 percent.

The expansion of the accommodations in Tempelhof and Tegel illustrates the constantly increasing challenge of adequately providing and integrating refugees. Berlin relies on major accommodation to do justice to this situation. according to a report by www.berliner-kurier.de
